Vegas, Day 1

by Jay on Dec.14, 2008, under All

Woke up at 5:45AM EST for my 8:00 AM flight.  Flight left on time, which is a first for me when flying anywhere.  My seat was in the back and I was one of the first people to board, so I spent the time watching other passengers board.  Now let me tell you about Ferarri Cowboy.  Ferarri Cowboy is old man in his 70s.  Why do I call him Ferarri Cowboy?  It’s because he was wearing a huge red cowboy hat (which was the first of many I saw on my trip).  Also, he is wearing a red Ferarri jacket.  At one point during the flight Ferarri Cowboy got up to use the lavatory.  He had taken off his jacket, but the rest of his apparel was just as odd.  Under the jacket was a flowery vest, not quite the same hue as a hawaiian shirt, but close.  Under that he was wearing a red long- sleeved shirt.  Adorning his neck were several strands of mardi gras like beads, only metallic.  He had as much bling around his neck as Mr T.  He also sported the same kinds of beads on his wrists, like bracelets.  I pity the fool who had to wait behind him in the security screening area.  But I didn’t come to Vegas to talk about Ferarri Cowboy…

After the 5.5 hour flight I made my way to the MGM checkin desk, and minutes later was on the shuttle to the strip.  I putzed around the hotel and casino for a bit while I waited for my room to get ready.  Eventually got upstairs to a wonderful view of Hooters and the airport behind it.  Tried napping for a bit but it was no use as I was too excited, so I went down to the casino.

Random Interjection: Whilst traveling the strip I saw many signs and billboards advertising Rita Rudner, with the tagline Comedian of the Year. I say, ‘What year?”

Fed a few slot machines, played a little video poker and roulette.  Decided to take the Deuce bus to Fremont Street.  Wandered in and out of a few casinos while awaiting the light show.  In the Four Queens, I found a Star Wars slot machine I couldn’t pass up, and doubled a $20 in it.  Decided to break my Blackjack cheery.  The only available table was one with modified rules.  You can bet 1-3 times, and you are dealt one set of cards like regular Blackjack, regardless of how many bets you made.  The dealer takes care of their hand, and pays out winners and losers on the first bet.  Then, they keep one of their cards and deal to themself again, versus your same cards.  After that hand plays out they keep another card and deal themself once more.  What sucked about this game is if you busted you would lose all your bets.  I left the table down 5 bucks.  On my way out I fed the Star Wars slot another $20, which didn’t double this time.

Hung around for a little while longer as I wanted to catch the light show.  Whilst waiting a group of college kids walked out of Fitzgerald’s, and one of them must have either hit it big or been very drunk because he had a wad of singles he was tossing into the chilly wind in order to make it rain.  But since it was so cold not many people were outside and the bills just fluttered down the street.  I was able to snag one though.  Did get to eventually see the light show, but I wasn’t too impressed.  It seemed to be more of an ad for LG than anything.  I then found my way to the Deuce.  Traffic turned the trip back to the MGM into 1.5 hours.  I did get to see the Bellagio Fountains and Mirage Volcano on the way back, though.  When I finally made it back to the hotel I went up to my room because I was tired since I was still on Fort Lauderdale time.  Tomorrow I plan on entering a poker tournament.  Will let you know how it turns out.

Random Interjection: I saw signs for a show with Donny and Marie Osmond. It reminding me of a children’s book I had in which Donny and Marie build some sort of robot. I have no clue why this popped into my head. Crazy stuff.
